Study in Portugal

Choose a Portuguese programme, prepare original qualification records and check current visa and AIMA residence steps. Understand local assessment through a scoped university grading reference, not a foreign-CGPA shortcut. Tuition, admission, maintenance evidence and actual living costs need separate planning with the institution and competent authority.

Programmes and entry preparation

Different programmes and institutions set their own admission and fee conditions. Foreign qualification recognition, programme entry and professional recognition serve different purposes; ask which is actually required. The University of Coimbra explains its assessment and ECTS-weighted final classification, but that is not a universal conversion of overseas grades. Follow current authorities rather than legacy SEF procedure summaries.

Bachelor and first-degree study

Ask the institution how it assesses your foreign school qualification, required subjects, examinations and language for first-degree admission. Do not assume public-school domestic entry rules or fees apply to every international student.

  • Prepare school-leaving records, subject prerequisites and any required entrance or preparatory evidence.
  • Provide the original grading legend and programme-specific language evidence.
  • Check the institution deadline, admission conditions and qualification outcome before payment.
Discuss this study level

Master and postgraduate study

Confirm how the chosen programme evaluates your first degree and relevant subject content. Recognition, academic selection and language evidence need institution-specific review; a local passing grade is not an admission cutoff.

  • Prepare the first degree, transcripts, relevant subject credits and any required portfolio, references or experience.
  • Provide the original grading legend and programme-specific language evidence.
  • Check the institution deadline, admission conditions and qualification outcome before payment.
Discuss this study level

Doctoral, research and preparatory options

Confirm research proposal, supervision, previous qualification and funding with the institution. Doctoral or researcher residence can need a separate category assessment. Short, preparatory and non-degree courses must be checked for their actual immigration purpose.

Explore fields through the official programme portal

  • Engineering and technology
  • Computer science and data
  • Business and economics
  • Natural and life sciences
  • Humanities and social sciences
  • Design, education and other fields

These are search categories, not a promise that every institution offers every subject. Regulated professions and practical placements can require additional checks.

Portuguese assessment: Coimbra reference

Coimbra describes course grades from 0 to 20, with 10 the minimum pass, and final degree grades based on eligible course results weighted by ECTS. Its published classification method is not an international grade-conversion formula; verify your receiving institution rules.

Local grades, not a conversion of foreign marks
Grade or resultMeaning and scope
0-9 / 10-20Failing / passing course results in the Coimbra reference.
10-13 / 14-15Sufficient / good final-degree qualitative descriptions in this reference.
16-17 / 18-20Very good / excellent final-degree qualitative descriptions.
ECTS-weighted final resultBased on eligible course-unit results and credits; not a replacement for foreign recognition.

There is no universal German-style calculation applied here. Do not infer admission from a passing grade or convert your percentage or CGPA without an accepted method.

Local academic and recognition terms

ECTS
Credit weights are used in the Coimbra final-degree classification; credits measure study workload, not your foreign percentage.
Unidade curricular
Course unit; check its assessment and credit contribution in the programme catalogue.
AIMA / Article 91

Admission and language checks

  • Ask the institution which foreign qualification recognition or verification is needed for the intended level.
  • Confirm Portuguese/English teaching language and programme selection requirements.
  • Provide original transcripts, grading legends and required translations; no national conversion shortcut is supplied.

Questions before applying

Study in Portugal: FAQs

Use current institution and authority instructions for your case, not a generic regional checklist.

Does Coimbra use a 20-point system?

Yes. Its reference describes 0-20 course marks and 10 as the minimum pass. Check the receiving institution rules.

Official guidance

Is its weighted final degree result a foreign conversion formula?

No. It concerns eligible course marks weighted by ECTS in a degree, not recognition or conversion of overseas transcripts.

Are ECTS and grade percentages interchangeable?

No. Credits and assessment grades serve different purposes.

Does a visa itself finish the residence process?

Do not assume so. Check current consular entry and AIMA residence steps separately.

Can I rely on old SEF student instructions?

Use the current foreign-ministry and AIMA process; older summaries can retain outdated procedures.

Official guidance

Is one tuition fee valid for every international programme?

No. Obtain the institution charge and terms for your status and intake.

Is a grade conversion an admission decision?

No. Local grade references and official equivalence services explain academic records; the admitting institution still decides qualification recognition, subject fit, language and selection.

Should I convert my CGPA using a percentage shortcut?

Only use a conversion accepted by the receiving institution. Provide the original transcript, maximum and minimum passing marks, grading legend and any official conversion supplied by your awarding institution.

Is there a universal IELTS score or study-gap limit?

No universal score or gap cutoff is stated here. Check the actual programme requirements and explain your study history accurately; institutional selection and immigration assessment are separate.

Does an English-taught programme remove every local-language requirement?

No. Admission, daily life, placements and regulated professional practice can have different language expectations. Check the programme and any placement requirements separately.

Can part-time work pay for the initial visa application?

Do not rely on finding work. Prepare the required financial evidence before travel and a realistic budget without guaranteed earnings. Work rights do not guarantee a vacancy.

Are proof of funds and tuition the same cost?

No. Tuition is a charge; maintenance funds show resources available for living. Do not double-count the same living balance as both a fee and expenditure.

Are scholarships or fee waivers guaranteed?

No. Check nationality, programme, deadline, coverage and renewal conditions with the official provider. A tuition waiver may not cover living costs, insurance or travel.

Do all South Asian applicants use the same embassy?

No. Citizenship, passport and legal residence affect jurisdiction and documents. Confirm the current competent mission and authorized centre; some applicants may need to travel to another country.

Should I legalize every document before choosing a programme?

Check the institution and mission requirements first. Translation, apostille, consular legalization and academic verification are different procedures; apply the requirement relevant to your record and location.

Are admission, an appointment or a visa guaranteed?

No. Institutions and authorities decide. Published processing estimates do not include every appointment or passport-return delay, and support cannot guarantee a travel date.

Is my profile submitted when I use the page tool?

No. The tool creates a summary in your browser only. It does not send or store your entries on our server and is not an admissions assessment. Contact us separately to discuss available support.
