Opportunities for individuals and organisations

Portugal

Connecting Global Talent. Prepare for Portuguese study and lawful professional activity.

Explore qualifying education, employment, independent activity and temporary visits in Portugal. South Asian applicants should identify the actual visa purpose, competent consulate and any subsequent residence steps before making commitments. Employers can discuss candidate preparation around contract conditions, qualifications and the right authorization rather than assuming an invitation guarantees entry.

Portugal distinguishes a visa used for entry from a residence decision after arrival. Check current foreign-ministry and AIMA instructions, institution fees, financial evidence and insurance for your route. Older summaries can still describe previous agencies or procedures that should not be relied upon. A tourist itinerary, company registration or job offer does not itself establish residence or work rights.

Choose your Portugal journey

Two audiences. One accountable approach.

For individuals

Choose the Portuguese purpose before applying

Confirm admission, employment or independent activity and the current visa/residence sequence. Budget actual costs separately from financial evidence and follow the competent mission instructions.

Portugal: Study and academic preparation

Qualifying study in Portugal

Start with admission to an eligible institution and its programme-language and fee requirements. The appropriate study visa and residence conditions must be checked through the consulate and current AIMA guidance. Prepare academic, financial, accommodation and insurance evidence as required for the category. A study place does not guarantee residence or unrestricted employment during the course.

How we can help

Workforce process

A clear process from requirements to next steps

Keep employer evidence, applicant visa preparation and any residence formalities separate. Current authority instructions take priority over older agency or process summaries.

  1. 01

    Define requirements

Agree role, credentials, language and proposed employment conditions.

  2. 02

    Assess the route

Check the current professional-activity category and any licensing needs.

  3. 03

    Coordinate preparation

Align employer evidence, candidate documents and consular instructions.

  4. 04

    Plan lawful arrival

Confirm the decision, actual right to work and applicable residence formalities.

Why Portugal

Current Portuguese guidance, realistic preparation

Use the current process

Avoid relying on legacy agency names or assumptions about in-country regularization.

Separate entry and residence

A visa, an offer and a residence decision have different roles in the application sequence.

No automatic outcomes

Support scope must be agreed; institutions, employers and authorities make their own decisions.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about Portugal

Official sources reviewed on 31 October 2026. Older summaries contain legacy procedures; this overview defers to current foreign-ministry and AIMA guidance.

Does a residence visa itself grant residence?

The visa and subsequent residence procedure are distinct. Confirm current national visa conditions and the AIMA requirements applicable after arrival; do not treat an entry document as the final residence decision.

Read official guidance

Which guidance covers student residence?

AIMA publishes the current study-residence categories. Use its guidance together with institution admission and the competent consular checklist.

Read official guidance

How much will Portuguese study cost?

Request actual tuition, deposits and refund conditions from the institution. No national tuition or maintenance figure is quoted here. Living expenditure, financial evidence and insurance must be budgeted separately.

Do all courses have the same language requirements?

Do not assume a common language score. Check the programme language, admission criteria and required qualification evidence with the provider.

Is a paid overseas apprenticeship guaranteed?

No. Course admission, internship arrangements and employment authorization need separate checks. A general paid apprenticeship entry route has not been verified for this page.

What general national-visa evidence is needed?

The foreign ministry lists identity, application, travel insurance, financial resources, legal-residence evidence where relevant and criminal-record documentation with applicable legalization. Purpose-specific and additional consular documents can also be required.

Read official guidance

Are employed and independent activity the same visa purpose?

No. The foreign ministry lists subordinate work separately from independent work or migrant entrepreneur. Assess the actual activity and the relevant current documents.

Read official guidance

Can registering a business guarantee residence?

No. The activity, resources and applicable visa/residence conditions must be assessed separately from company registration. A business meeting also has a different purpose.

Can I rely on old tourist-to-work advice or job-seeker advertising?

Do not rely on it. Current eligibility and procedures must be checked with the competent Portuguese authority. No general tourist-to-work or currently available job-seeker route is advertised on this page.

Where should South Asian applicants submit?

Verify nationality and legal-residence jurisdiction with the Portuguese consulate. The foreign ministry requires evidence of regular status where an applicant applies outside their country of nationality; centre and document arrangements need location-specific confirmation.

Read official guidance

What are the basic Schengen visit costs and timings?

The Commission lists a standard adult fee of EUR 90 and normal processing of 15 days, extendable to 45 days. Exemptions, centre fees and booking delays are separate. Short stays are limited to up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the area.

Read official guidance

Can an admission, job or visa decision be promised?

No. Verify providers and offers, agree support scope and avoid fabricated documents or guaranteed-outcome marketing. The relevant institution, employer and authority remain responsible for decisions.
