Opportunities for individuals and organisations

Austria

Connecting Global Talent. Prepare for Austrian education, employment and enterprise.

Explore higher education, qualified employment, active entrepreneurship and temporary visits in Austria. For applicants from South Asia, the starting point is a qualifying programme, a suitable job or a clearly defined business or travel purpose, followed by the correct visa or residence application.

Admission, work authorization and professional recognition are separate decisions. Compare university fees and living costs, check the language of your programme or workplace, and prepare the financial and identity evidence for your route. Employers can discuss role requirements and recruitment preparation without assuming that a vacancy guarantees a permit.

Choose your Austria journey

Two audiences. One accountable approach.

For individuals

Choose a qualifying Austrian pathway

Your qualifications, admission or contract, finances and intended activity determine the route. Discuss preparation for your situation rather than relying on a generic visa checklist.

Austria: Professional work and career planning

Qualified employment in Austria

Austria has Red-White-Red Card categories for specified qualified workers and a separate EU Blue Card route. Eligibility differs by category, occupation, qualifications and employment terms. The Red-White-Red Card is generally tied to the employer named in the application. Check professional licensing separately before accepting work in a regulated occupation.

Workforce process

A clear process from requirements to next steps

An Austrian hiring plan should account for category eligibility, any recognition steps and the employer-specific nature of the initial authorization.

  1. 01

    Define the role

Agree duties, credentials, language, employment terms and the intended start date.

  2. 02

    Assess the category

Check the relevant Red-White-Red Card or other employment category and recognition needs.

  3. 03

    Prepare evidence

Coordinate candidate and employer documents through the responsible application process.

  4. 04

    Plan lawful arrival

Align travel and onboarding with the decision and the actual right to work.

Why Austria

A realistic Austrian plan starts with the right category

Category-specific preparation

Admission, points or other category criteria and an eligible contract must be assessed separately.

Transparent budgeting

Tuition, financial evidence, insurance and actual living costs are different parts of the plan.

No guaranteed outcomes

Institutions, employers and authorities make decisions; support scope must be agreed in advance.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about Austria

Official sources reviewed on 31 October 2026. Amounts and requirements can change; follow the current institution and mission instructions for your application.

What does university study cost?

OeAD publishes general third-country public-university tuition of EUR 726.72 per semester, with exemptions depending on status and institution. Its current page also lists a compulsory student-union contribution of EUR 26.20 per semester. Applied-sciences and private-provider fees vary. Confirm the exact programme invoice.

Read official guidance

Which programmes qualify for student residence?

OeAD lists eligible higher-education degree programmes and certain qualifying non-degree or preparatory programmes. A course that only teaches a language or attendance at individual courses is not generally sufficient. Admission and residence eligibility are separate checks.

Read official guidance

Is there one language score for every institution?

No single programme score is advertised here. Check the teaching language, accepted evidence and entrance requirements with the chosen institution before paying fees.

Are living funds the same as tuition?

No. Student residence preparation must separately address maintenance, health insurance and any unpaid education costs. The exact current calculation and acceptable evidence must be checked in the OeAD checklist; do not use a worker income figure as a student threshold.

Can I assume a paid apprenticeship is available from abroad?

No. A course, apprenticeship contract and immigration/work permission are different issues. A general overseas paid-apprenticeship route has not been verified for this page. Confirm the provider, employer and relevant authority rules before committing.

What is the Red-White-Red Card?

It is a category-based Austrian residence and employment authorization for specified third-country applicants. The official overview states a 24-month period and employment with the employer specified in the application. Qualification and category conditions must also be met.

Read official guidance

Does an Austrian company purchase grant residence?

Do not assume that ownership qualifies. Self-employed key workers and start-up founders must meet their respective official category conditions; registration and a residence application are separate matters.

Read official guidance

Where should South Asian applicants apply?

Nationality and legal country of residence determine the competent mission and checklist. Check the Austrian representation for your residence location; do not assume every applicant can submit in their home country or use the same visa centre.

What is the short-stay limit?

The Schengen short-stay limit is up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the area, subject to the visa issued and border conditions. It is not a general right to work.

Read official guidance

What does a standard Schengen visa cost?

The European Commission lists EUR 90 for adults; exemptions and additional authorized-centre charges may apply. This is not a residence-permit fee. Check the current mission fee schedule.

Read official guidance

How long does a Schengen application take?

The Commission lists normal processing of 15 days, extendable to 45 days for further examination. Appointment waiting and passport return are separate; do not treat this as a promised travel date.

Read official guidance

Can admission, a job or a permit be guaranteed?

No. Discuss the scope of preparation support first. Do not pay for guaranteed decisions, fabricated invitations or unverifiable offers; the relevant institution, employer and authority retain decision-making responsibility.
