Study in Austria

Compare Austrian degree programmes, prepare your entrance qualifications and understand the local grading reference before applying. Check programme language, tuition, supplementary examinations and the student residence process separately. An original transcript and its grading legend are more useful than an unapproved percentage-to-Austrian conversion.

Austria: Study and academic preparation

Programmes and entry preparation

Universities, universities of applied sciences and other accredited providers have different admission and fee conditions. Austrian terminology distinguishes university entrance qualification, degree recognition and supplementary examinations. The national university grading method and any weighted overall result concern local assessment, not automatic recognition of overseas records. Institution admission and student residence eligibility remain independent decisions.

Bachelor and first-degree study

Confirm the general entrance qualification and programme-specific subject conditions with the institution. Supplementary examinations or a qualifying university preparation programme may be required; do not assume a generic language course is sufficient for residence.

  • Prepare school-leaving records, subject prerequisites and any required entrance or preparatory evidence.
  • Provide the original grading legend and programme-specific language evidence.
  • Check the institution deadline, admission conditions and qualification outcome before payment.

Master and postgraduate study

A relevant first degree and subject content must meet institution requirements. Additional subject examinations can be prescribed where needed. Check programme language, selection and the accepted original grading evidence.

  • Prepare the first degree, transcripts, relevant subject credits and any required portfolio, references or experience.
  • Provide the original grading legend and programme-specific language evidence.
  • Check the institution deadline, admission conditions and qualification outcome before payment.
Discuss this study level

Doctoral, research and preparatory options

Confirm the relevant previous degree, supervisor and research admission rules. Research employment and doctoral study can have different residence questions. OeAD lists eligible degree and specified non-degree/preparatory student programmes; isolated courses are not generally sufficient.

Austrian grades, overall results and recognition

The Universities Act reference describes 1 as very good and 5 as insufficient. It also describes an ECTS-weighted overall result in the relevant circumstances. This is not Germany's modified Bavarian formula or an automatic foreign conversion; check current German-language law and institution rules.

Local grades, not a conversion of foreign marks
Grade or resultMeaning and scope
1 / 2Sehr gut / gut: very good / good in the statutory assessment reference.
3 / 4 / 5Befriedigend / genuegend / nicht genuegend: satisfactory / sufficient / insufficient.
GesamtnoteOverall result may use ECTS weighting; not a formula for foreign qualification admission.

There is no universal German-style calculation applied here. Do not infer admission from a passing grade or convert your percentage or CGPA without an accepted method.

Read Universities Act sections 72 and 72a; German text is authoritative

Local academic and recognition terms

Universitaetsreife
University entrance qualification; general and subject-specific conditions differ.
Ergaenzungspruefungen
Supplementary examinations that may be prescribed for admission or language requirements.
Nostrifizierung
Recognition of a foreign degree as a domestic one; not universally required for ordinary admission.

Admission and language checks

  • Confirm foreign qualification, programme subjects and any supplementary examination conditions.
  • Check German/English language requirements with the institution; no universal test score is quoted.
  • Request the actual recognition procedure instead of assuming full nostrification is always necessary.

Funding opportunities

Scholarships and fee waivers

OeAD explains that scholarships, exchange status and other grounds may affect tuition exemptions. Confirm award eligibility, coverage and deadlines with the official provider; a waiver is not guaranteed living-cost funding.

Work rights are conditional, and employment is not guaranteed funding.

During study and after graduation

Working while studying

Check the current OeAD work guidance and actual residence conditions before accepting employment. Employer permission and the type of study or placement can matter; no unrestricted work or guaranteed earnings are advertised.

OeAD identifies qualifying post-completion job-search or business possibilities within its student guidance. Verify the completed qualification, application timing, finances and permitted activity before relying on a transition.

Arrival and continued study

Follow institution registration, residence documentation, insurance and academic-progress instructions. Continued studies, supplementary examinations and any renewal must be checked against the actual programme and permit.

Questions before applying

Study in Austria: FAQs

Use current institution and authority instructions for your case, not a generic regional checklist.

Are lower Austrian numeric grades better?

In the statutory assessment reference, 1 is very good and 5 is insufficient. This is not an overseas grade-conversion method.

Official guidance

What is a Gesamtnote?

An overall grade. The reference describes ECTS weighting in specified circumstances; ask the institution which rule applies.

Is Nostrifizierung required for every admission?

Do not assume it. Full foreign-degree nostrification and ordinary programme admission have different purposes.

What are supplementary examinations?

Ergaenzungspruefungen can address entrance, subject or language requirements prescribed by the institution.

Can a language-only course qualify for student residence?

Not automatically. OeAD distinguishes qualifying preparation from language-only or isolated course attendance.

Official guidance

What public-university tuition is published?

OeAD gives general third-country tuition of EUR 726.72 per semester, with exemptions. Check provider type, status and the current invoice.

Official guidance

Is a grade conversion an admission decision?

No. Local grade references and official equivalence services explain academic records; the admitting institution still decides qualification recognition, subject fit, language and selection.

Should I convert my CGPA using a percentage shortcut?

Only use a conversion accepted by the receiving institution. Provide the original transcript, maximum and minimum passing marks, grading legend and any official conversion supplied by your awarding institution.

Is there a universal IELTS score or study-gap limit?

No universal score or gap cutoff is stated here. Check the actual programme requirements and explain your study history accurately; institutional selection and immigration assessment are separate.

Does an English-taught programme remove every local-language requirement?

No. Admission, daily life, placements and regulated professional practice can have different language expectations. Check the programme and any placement requirements separately.

Can part-time work pay for the initial visa application?

Do not rely on finding work. Prepare the required financial evidence before travel and a realistic budget without guaranteed earnings. Work rights do not guarantee a vacancy.

Are proof of funds and tuition the same cost?

No. Tuition is a charge; maintenance funds show resources available for living. Do not double-count the same living balance as both a fee and expenditure.

Are scholarships or fee waivers guaranteed?

No. Check nationality, programme, deadline, coverage and renewal conditions with the official provider. A tuition waiver may not cover living costs, insurance or travel.

Do all South Asian applicants use the same embassy?

No. Citizenship, passport and legal residence affect jurisdiction and documents. Confirm the current competent mission and authorized centre; some applicants may need to travel to another country.

Should I legalize every document before choosing a programme?

Check the institution and mission requirements first. Translation, apostille, consular legalization and academic verification are different procedures; apply the requirement relevant to your record and location.

Are admission, an appointment or a visa guaranteed?

No. Institutions and authorities decide. Published processing estimates do not include every appointment or passport-return delay, and support cannot guarantee a travel date.

Is my profile submitted when I use the page tool?

No. The tool creates a summary in your browser only. It does not send or store your entries on our server and is not an admissions assessment. Contact us separately to discuss available support.
