Study in the Netherlands

Compare research-oriented and professionally oriented Dutch study, prepare original academic records and check the institution-led residence process. Understand local grades without treating them as a direct conversion of your percentage or CGPA. Plan tuition, financial evidence and actual living expenditure before committing to a programme.

Programmes and entry preparation

Dutch universities and universities of applied sciences offer different academic routes. Programme fit, previous qualification, subject credits and language are institution decisions; recognized student sponsorship is a separate immigration requirement. Non-EU tuition is not automatically the statutory fee. This page concerns the European Netherlands, not separate Caribbean education or entry systems.

Bachelor and first-degree study

HBO programmes are profession-oriented; WO programmes are research-oriented. Check how the institution assesses your foreign entrance qualification and required subjects. Limited-place programmes may use numerus fixus selection, not just a passing grade.

  • Prepare school-leaving records, subject prerequisites and any required entrance or preparatory evidence.
  • Provide the original grading legend and programme-specific language evidence.
  • Check the institution deadline, admission conditions and qualification outcome before payment.
Discuss this study level

Master and postgraduate study

Confirm whether your first degree and subject content meet the programme HBO or WO requirements. Bridging or other conditions are institution-specific; a bachelor title alone does not guarantee entry to every research master.

  • Prepare the first degree, transcripts, relevant subject credits and any required portfolio, references or experience.
  • Provide the original grading legend and programme-specific language evidence.
  • Check the institution deadline, admission conditions and qualification outcome before payment.

Doctoral, research and preparatory options

Doctoral/research and other advanced positions require a host-specific academic and funding/employment assessment. The residence category can differ from ordinary taught study. Part-time, online or short courses must be checked separately for immigration eligibility.

Explore fields through the official programme portal

  • Engineering and technology
  • Computer science and data
  • Business and economics
  • Natural and life sciences
  • Humanities and social sciences
  • Design, education and other fields

These are search categories, not a promise that every institution offers every subject. Regulated professions and practical placements can require additional checks.

Dutch 10-point grades and qualification types

Study in NL describes 10 as the highest grade and 6 as the minimum pass. It explicitly warns that similar-looking foreign scales cannot be matched directly. Institution rounding and programme selection need separate checking.

Local grades, not a conversion of foreign marks
Grade or resultMeaning and scope
10 / 9 / 8Outstanding / very good / good; the highest grades are rare.
7 / 6More than satisfactory / satisfactory; 6 is the reference minimum pass.
5 and belowBelow the reference pass; verify institution assessment and rounding rules.

There is no universal German-style calculation applied here. Do not infer admission from a passing grade or convert your percentage or CGPA without an accepted method.

Local academic and recognition terms

HBO - hoger beroepsonderwijs
Higher professional education, usually at a university of applied sciences.
WO - wetenschappelijk onderwijs
Research-oriented university education.
Numerus fixus
Limited admission places and selection for specified programmes; not a foreign grade-conversion formula.

Admission and language checks

  • Confirm foreign qualification equivalence and programme-specific subject content with the institution.
  • Check teaching language, accepted tests and any limited-place selection deadline.
  • Retain original grading legends; do not divide foreign percentages to produce a Dutch grade.

Funding opportunities

Scholarships and fee waivers

Check institution and official Study in NL funding options for your nationality and programme. Coverage, deadlines and selection differ; do not treat a scholarship application as available living funds or a tuition waiver as full sponsorship.

Work rights are conditional, and employment is not guaranteed funding.

During study and after graduation

Working while studying

Check current IND student employment conditions and employer authorization before accepting work or a placement. No universal work-hour rule is inferred from nationality-dependent controls; employment is not guaranteed funding.

Graduate orientation or employment options require their own current eligibility, qualification and application checks. Confirm timing and work conditions with IND; graduation does not guarantee sponsorship or a job.

Arrival and continued study

Follow institution and IND instructions on registration, residence documents, insurance and required academic progress. Check renewal or provider/programme changes before making commitments.

Questions before applying

Study in the Netherlands: FAQs

Use current institution and authority instructions for your case, not a generic regional checklist.

Are HBO and WO the same type of programme?

No. Nuffic distinguishes higher professional education and research-oriented university education.

Official guidance

Can 80% automatically be converted to Dutch 8?

No. The official Dutch explanation specifically warns against direct matching of similar-looking scales.

Official guidance

What is numerus fixus?

It identifies limited admission places and selection in certain programmes; it is not a visa or grade formula.

Who applies for the specified student permit?

IND states that the educational institution applies. Confirm its admission and document process.

Official guidance

Are statutory fees my non-EU tuition budget?

Do not assume eligibility. Use your institution assessment and invoice, not the statutory amount for a different status.

Official guidance

Does this page cover Caribbean study and entry?

No. Confirm those jurisdictions separately.

Is a grade conversion an admission decision?

No. Local grade references and official equivalence services explain academic records; the admitting institution still decides qualification recognition, subject fit, language and selection.

Should I convert my CGPA using a percentage shortcut?

Only use a conversion accepted by the receiving institution. Provide the original transcript, maximum and minimum passing marks, grading legend and any official conversion supplied by your awarding institution.

Is there a universal IELTS score or study-gap limit?

No universal score or gap cutoff is stated here. Check the actual programme requirements and explain your study history accurately; institutional selection and immigration assessment are separate.

Does an English-taught programme remove every local-language requirement?

No. Admission, daily life, placements and regulated professional practice can have different language expectations. Check the programme and any placement requirements separately.

Can part-time work pay for the initial visa application?

Do not rely on finding work. Prepare the required financial evidence before travel and a realistic budget without guaranteed earnings. Work rights do not guarantee a vacancy.

Are proof of funds and tuition the same cost?

No. Tuition is a charge; maintenance funds show resources available for living. Do not double-count the same living balance as both a fee and expenditure.

Are scholarships or fee waivers guaranteed?

No. Check nationality, programme, deadline, coverage and renewal conditions with the official provider. A tuition waiver may not cover living costs, insurance or travel.

Do all South Asian applicants use the same embassy?

No. Citizenship, passport and legal residence affect jurisdiction and documents. Confirm the current competent mission and authorized centre; some applicants may need to travel to another country.

Should I legalize every document before choosing a programme?

Check the institution and mission requirements first. Translation, apostille, consular legalization and academic verification are different procedures; apply the requirement relevant to your record and location.

Are admission, an appointment or a visa guaranteed?

No. Institutions and authorities decide. Published processing estimates do not include every appointment or passport-return delay, and support cannot guarantee a travel date.

Is my profile submitted when I use the page tool?

No. The tool creates a summary in your browser only. It does not send or store your entries on our server and is not an admissions assessment. Contact us separately to discuss available support.
