Study in Italy

Choose an Italian programme, prepare your academic records and follow the institution, Universitaly and consular steps in the correct order. Learn how local course marks differ from final degree results. An academic grading reference is not an official conversion of your foreign qualification or a guarantee of admission.

Programmes and entry preparation

Programme language, tuition, entrance tests and qualification evidence depend on the institution. Relevant international university applications use validated online pre-enrolment, but the consulate makes the visa decision. Budget tuition, insurance, housing and maintenance evidence separately. Keep your original grading legend and any required recognition or comparability documents rather than replacing them with an informal percentage-to-Italian conversion.

Bachelor and first-degree study

Check the school qualification, subject prerequisites, programme language and any entrance selection. Universitaly guides relevant international university pre-enrolment; institution assessment and required academic verification remain necessary.

  • Prepare school-leaving records, subject prerequisites and any required entrance or preparatory evidence.
  • Provide the original grading legend and programme-specific language evidence.
  • Check the institution deadline, admission conditions and qualification outcome before payment.
Discuss this study level

Master and postgraduate study

Confirm that the first degree, subject background and transcript meet the chosen programme. Language, credits and any required comparison or verification evidence are institution-specific, not established by a universal Italian converted grade.

  • Prepare the first degree, transcripts, relevant subject credits and any required portfolio, references or experience.
  • Provide the original grading legend and programme-specific language evidence.
  • Check the institution deadline, admission conditions and qualification outcome before payment.
Discuss this study level

Doctoral, research and preparatory options

Check doctoral calls, research proposal, supervisor and funding conditions with the institution. Doctoral/research residence may require separate assessment. Language or preparatory study must qualify for its actual visa purpose rather than being assumed equivalent to university enrolment.

Explore fields through the official programme portal

  • Engineering and technology
  • Computer science and data
  • Business and economics
  • Natural and life sciences
  • Humanities and social sciences
  • Design, education and other fields

These are search categories, not a promise that every institution offers every subject. Regulated professions and practical placements can require additional checks.

Italian course marks and final degree grades

Nuffic distinguishes subject assessment from the overall diploma result. They are different scales; do not compare a course mark out of 30 with a final result out of 110 or invent a linear foreign-grade conversion.

Local grades, not a conversion of foreign marks
Grade or resultMeaning and scope
Course marks: 0-30A mark of at least 18 is required for a pass in the referenced system.
Degree result: 66-110Overall diploma assessment, separate from individual course marks.
110 con lodeThe maximum diploma result may carry an honours designation; not a guaranteed admission requirement.

There is no universal German-style calculation applied here. Do not infer admission from a passing grade or convert your percentage or CGPA without an accepted method.

Local academic and recognition terms

Pre-enrolment
Universitaly application validated by the institution for the relevant consular study process.
Con lode
Honours designation associated with the highest overall result in the referenced grading system.
Permesso di soggiorno per motivi di studio
Study permit of stay; arrival procedures remain separate from the entry visa.

Admission and language checks

  • Confirm recognition, comparability or verification evidence with the institution and mission before ordering services.
  • Check Italian or English programme evidence and entrance tests.
  • Submit original grades and both the course and degree-result legends where relevant.

During study and after graduation

Working while studying

The European Commission study overview describes limited student employment. Confirm current terms, placements and actual residence conditions before working; a student document is not unrestricted full-time employment authorization.

Graduate job-search or employment/business changes depend on qualification and current authorization conditions. Do not assume graduation guarantees a conversion, quota slot or job; check the relevant authority process before expiry.

Arrival and continued study

Universitaly directs relevant national study-visa arrivals to begin the permit-of-stay procedure within eight working days. Follow current local instructions, finalize enrolment and check renewal, insurance and academic-progress requirements.

Questions before applying

Study in Italy: FAQs

Use current institution and authority instructions for your case, not a generic regional checklist.

Why does Italy have 30-point and 110-point results?

They describe different assessments: course results and the overall diploma. Keep both scales distinct.

Official guidance

What does con lode mean?

It is an honours designation that may accompany the maximum overall diploma result; it is not a foreign conversion formula.

Does Universitaly validation guarantee a visa?

No. The institution validates the relevant pre-enrolment record; the consulate decides the visa.

Official guidance

Do I need the same recognition document for every university?

Confirm the exact institution and consular requirements before paying for verification or comparability services. Do not treat one document as universally mandatory.

Can I assume every Italian degree is taught in English?

No. Universitaly notes Italian-taught undergraduate options and English-taught programmes where offered. Check the actual programme.

Are there arrival deadlines for the study permit?

Universitaly states eight working days for the relevant national study-visa arrival procedure. Follow the local current instructions.

Official guidance

Is a grade conversion an admission decision?

No. Local grade references and official equivalence services explain academic records; the admitting institution still decides qualification recognition, subject fit, language and selection.

Should I convert my CGPA using a percentage shortcut?

Only use a conversion accepted by the receiving institution. Provide the original transcript, maximum and minimum passing marks, grading legend and any official conversion supplied by your awarding institution.

Is there a universal IELTS score or study-gap limit?

No universal score or gap cutoff is stated here. Check the actual programme requirements and explain your study history accurately; institutional selection and immigration assessment are separate.

Does an English-taught programme remove every local-language requirement?

No. Admission, daily life, placements and regulated professional practice can have different language expectations. Check the programme and any placement requirements separately.

Can part-time work pay for the initial visa application?

Do not rely on finding work. Prepare the required financial evidence before travel and a realistic budget without guaranteed earnings. Work rights do not guarantee a vacancy.

Are proof of funds and tuition the same cost?

No. Tuition is a charge; maintenance funds show resources available for living. Do not double-count the same living balance as both a fee and expenditure.

Are scholarships or fee waivers guaranteed?

No. Check nationality, programme, deadline, coverage and renewal conditions with the official provider. A tuition waiver may not cover living costs, insurance or travel.

Do all South Asian applicants use the same embassy?

No. Citizenship, passport and legal residence affect jurisdiction and documents. Confirm the current competent mission and authorized centre; some applicants may need to travel to another country.

Should I legalize every document before choosing a programme?

Check the institution and mission requirements first. Translation, apostille, consular legalization and academic verification are different procedures; apply the requirement relevant to your record and location.

Are admission, an appointment or a visa guaranteed?

No. Institutions and authorities decide. Published processing estimates do not include every appointment or passport-return delay, and support cannot guarantee a travel date.

Is my profile submitted when I use the page tool?

No. The tool creates a summary in your browser only. It does not send or store your entries on our server and is not an admissions assessment. Contact us separately to discuss available support.
