Germany: Practical vocational training

A practical route into a profession

What is Ausbildung?

Ausbildung is vocational training for a specific occupation, rather than a university degree. You develop the knowledge and practical skills needed for that profession and work towards its examinations and qualification.

Company + vocational school

Dual vocational training

Practical work with a training employer is combined with lessons at a vocational school (Berufsschule). School may run on particular weekdays or in blocks.

  • Usually around two to three-and-a-half years, depending on the occupation and any approved shortening or extension.
  • A training contract sets out the allowance, working hours, leave and training obligations.
  • The employer normally pays a training allowance; exact amounts vary by occupation and year.

Vocational school + placements

School-based and specialist training

Some professions follow school-based or separately regulated pathways, often with practical placements. Nursing, for example, has its own training rules.

  • Duration, school qualifications and admission rules depend on the profession and provider.
  • Some pathways are paid, while others may be unpaid or involve fees.
  • Confirm professional recognition, funding and the actual qualification before choosing a course.

Learn while gaining experience

Why Ausbildung?

Work plus training

Apply what you learn in a real workplace while developing vocational knowledge. Dual training connects classroom learning with supervised practical work.

Earn during paid training

A paid training contract may, for example, offer around €900–€1,200 gross per month. This is an illustrative range, not a guaranteed allowance or a national average; contracts can pay less or more.

Build a skilled career

Qualifying in a field with recruitment shortages can support strong employment prospects. Qualified roles generally offer higher pay than trainee allowances, but an offer, salary increase or employer takeover is not guaranteed.

Develop transferable skills

Build occupation-specific skills, professional German and workplace experience. Further qualifications or specialisation may become options once you meet their entry requirements.

What does the official pay data say?

BIBB reports an average of €1,209 gross per month for 2025, across training years in collectively agreed training covered by its analysis. This does not describe every training contract or school-based course.

Check the allowance for each training year, gross-to-net deductions and local living costs. Rent, insurance, travel and other expenses can mean that additional funds are needed.

Cross Border Legal Europe support

Our end-to-end support

From profile review and applications to contract decisions and visa preparation, we help organise each step. Training providers and authorities make the final decisions.

Profile & Application SupportReview your profile, identify suitable routes and prepare applications with training providers.
  1. Profile and document review. Review education, experience, certificates and transcripts; identify gaps, translations or recognition checks that may be needed.
  2. Language readiness check. Compare your current German skills and evidence with employer, school and visa expectations; identify further preparation needs. This is not a certified language assessment.
  3. Occupation and provider shortlist. Identify Ausbildung fields suited to your interests and profile, then explore relevant training employers, schools or institutes and their actual criteria.
  4. Application preparation and coordination. Support your CV, motivation letter and supporting documents; assist with submissions, deadlines and application communication where authorised.
  5. Interview and assessment preparation. Help you practise explaining your motivation, background and occupation choice, and prepare for the provider's stated selection process.
  6. Results and offer follow-up. Track responses, help you understand assessment feedback and coordinate follow-up. If an offer is received, move to contract review before accepting.

Next milestone: an offer ready for review, if selected by the provider. We cannot issue assessment results or guarantee an offer.

Discuss your application profile →
Offer & Contract SupportUnderstand the agreement, clarify open questions and coordinate informed acceptance.
  1. Review the training agreement. Help you understand the employer, qualification, dates, training location, allowance for each year, working hours, leave, probation and termination terms.
  2. Clarify outstanding questions. With your authorisation, communicate with the provider about unclear terms, school arrangements, required documents or start-date conditions. Specialist legal questions may require separate advice.
  3. Coordinate informed acceptance. Support the administrative steps for acceptance and signatures after you have reviewed the terms, and help you obtain and organise the complete signed agreement.
  4. Confirm the visa handover. Check which employer or school documents are needed next, clarify any registration or recognition evidence, and coordinate realistic start dates while visa requirements are reviewed.

Next milestone: a complete training agreement and a clear document handover. A signed contract does not guarantee a visa.

Ask about your training offer →
Visa & Arrival SupportPrepare the application, respond to follow-up requests and plan your next steps.
  1. Confirm the applicable process. Review whether you need a visa, the appropriate training route and the responsible German mission's current checklist and appointment procedure.
  2. Prepare the visa document file. Help organise the signed agreement, passport, education records, language evidence, forms, photographs and any requested translations or additional certificates.
  3. Review financial evidence. Check the actual training allowance against current funding requirements and identify whether additional evidence of funds may be needed.
  4. Coordinate suitable health insurance. Help you identify the required cover and coordinate arrangements with an appropriate provider, including entry dates and the transition to training cover. Policy terms and charges must be confirmed separately.
  5. Prepare for the visa interview. Help you explain your training choice, background, finances and plans clearly and truthfully, if an interview is required.
  6. Review and support submission. Check the file against the official checklist and assist with online preparation or appointment coordination where permitted. You remain responsible for declarations, signatures, personal attendance and biometrics when required.
  7. Coordinate additional queries. Help prepare responses to official requests, obtain additional employer documents and track follow-up communication within the agreed scope and authorisation.
  8. Review the decision and next steps. Help check issued visa details and coordinate employer updates, arrival preparation and reminders about registration or residence-permit steps. Refusals or legal challenges may need separate specialist advice.

Next milestone: an application prepared for official assessment and clear follow-up. Only the relevant authorities decide whether to grant a visa.
