Study in France

Explore French degree programmes, understand local academic records and prepare your admission and student residence documents. Compare actual tuition and exemptions with the institution, not a universal study-price promise. Original qualifications, programme language and selection criteria matter independently of the French 20-point grading reference.

Programmes and entry preparation

Public universities and other higher-education providers can have different fee and admission rules. Check the procedure relevant to your residence location through Campus France and the institution, then the current consular student process. French academic terms help explain programme levels and transcripts; they do not establish foreign qualification equivalence. This page concerns metropolitan France, not every overseas territory.

Bachelor and first-degree study

For first-cycle study, check the institution entrance qualification, subject requirements and application channel. The appropriate Campus France or preliminary-admission procedure depends on programme and applicant location; a foreign school certificate is not automatically equivalent to a French baccalaureate.

  • Prepare school-leaving records, subject prerequisites and any required entrance or preparatory evidence.
  • Provide the original grading legend and programme-specific language evidence.
  • Check the institution deadline, admission conditions and qualification outcome before payment.
Discuss this study level

Master and postgraduate study

A relevant first degree, transcripts and subject background must meet the master programme requirements. Confirm the institution language evidence, selection, references and any portfolio rather than applying one universal grade cutoff.

  • Prepare the first degree, transcripts, relevant subject credits and any required portfolio, references or experience.
  • Provide the original grading legend and programme-specific language evidence.
  • Check the institution deadline, admission conditions and qualification outcome before payment.
Discuss this study level

Doctoral, research and preparatory options

Doctoral admission can require a research proposal, supervisor and funding or employment arrangement. Check the researcher/student immigration category separately. Preparatory, language and non-degree courses do not automatically have the same residence eligibility as degree study.

Explore fields through the official programme portal

  • Engineering and technology
  • Computer science and data
  • Business and economics
  • Natural and life sciences
  • Humanities and social sciences
  • Design, education and other fields

These are search categories, not a promise that every institution offers every subject. Regulated professions and practical placements can require additional checks.

French grades and academic records

Nuffic describes the 20-point system, with most higher-education institutions using the referenced scale. Local pass and honours descriptions are not a formula for converting a South Asian percentage or CGPA. Institution rules can also govern compensation and progression.

Local grades, not a conversion of foreign marks
Grade or resultMeaning and scope
16-20Very good in the referenced scale.
14-15.99 / 12-13.99Good / satisfactory in the referenced scale.
10-11.99 / below 10Pass / fail in the referenced scale; confirm institution-specific assessment rules.

There is no universal German-style calculation applied here. Do not infer admission from a passing grade or convert your percentage or CGPA without an accepted method.

Local academic and recognition terms

Releve de notes
Transcript of marks; keep it with the diploma and grading legend.
Attestation de reussite
Certificate/extract confirming successful completion, distinct from an admission offer.
VLS-TS
Long-stay visa equivalent to a residence permit; validation obligations must be followed for the issued category.

Admission and language checks

  • Confirm how the institution evaluates your specific foreign school certificate or degree.
  • Check programme French/English requirements; no national IELTS score is stated.
  • Provide the original transcript and required academic verification rather than a self-calculated equivalence.

Funding opportunities

Scholarships and fee waivers

Campus France explains status-dependent tuition waivers and scholarship-linked exemptions. Confirm the actual award, nationality eligibility, deadline and coverage; neither an exemption nor admission guarantees living-cost funding.

Work rights are conditional, and employment is not guaranteed funding.

During study and after graduation

Working while studying

Qualifying student authorization permits employment under conditions. Verify the current work limit, employer obligations, placement conditions and the issued document before accepting work; older overview numbers are not a guarantee for every category.

Graduate job-search, business or employment transitions depend on the completed qualification and current application conditions. Check timing and work rights before the student document expires; no job or settlement outcome is promised.

Arrival and continued study

Follow any VLS-TS validation requirement and current residence-renewal instructions. Confirm university registration, insurance, accommodation and required academic progress with the institution and authority.

Questions before applying

Study in France: FAQs

Use current institution and authority instructions for your case, not a generic regional checklist.

Is 10/20 automatically enough for admission?

No. A local passing result is not a programme selection threshold or foreign qualification equivalence.

Official guidance

What is a releve de notes?

It is the transcript of marks. Provide it alongside the qualification and grading legend.

What differentiated fees are published for 2026-2027?

Campus France lists EUR 2,902 for covered bachelor programmes and EUR 3,950 for covered master programmes. Confirm exemptions and the institution invoice.

Official guidance

Why is no doctoral fee quoted here?

The retrieved official page contains inconsistent doctoral totals. The institution or controlling fee schedule must confirm the amount.

Does Campus France approval issue my visa?

No. Education procedures and the authority visa decision are separate.

Does this page cover French overseas territories?

No. Check the exact territory rather than assuming metropolitan entry rules apply.

Is a grade conversion an admission decision?

No. Local grade references and official equivalence services explain academic records; the admitting institution still decides qualification recognition, subject fit, language and selection.

Should I convert my CGPA using a percentage shortcut?

Only use a conversion accepted by the receiving institution. Provide the original transcript, maximum and minimum passing marks, grading legend and any official conversion supplied by your awarding institution.

Is there a universal IELTS score or study-gap limit?

No universal score or gap cutoff is stated here. Check the actual programme requirements and explain your study history accurately; institutional selection and immigration assessment are separate.

Does an English-taught programme remove every local-language requirement?

No. Admission, daily life, placements and regulated professional practice can have different language expectations. Check the programme and any placement requirements separately.

Can part-time work pay for the initial visa application?

Do not rely on finding work. Prepare the required financial evidence before travel and a realistic budget without guaranteed earnings. Work rights do not guarantee a vacancy.

Are proof of funds and tuition the same cost?

No. Tuition is a charge; maintenance funds show resources available for living. Do not double-count the same living balance as both a fee and expenditure.

Are scholarships or fee waivers guaranteed?

No. Check nationality, programme, deadline, coverage and renewal conditions with the official provider. A tuition waiver may not cover living costs, insurance or travel.

Do all South Asian applicants use the same embassy?

No. Citizenship, passport and legal residence affect jurisdiction and documents. Confirm the current competent mission and authorized centre; some applicants may need to travel to another country.

Should I legalize every document before choosing a programme?

Check the institution and mission requirements first. Translation, apostille, consular legalization and academic verification are different procedures; apply the requirement relevant to your record and location.

Are admission, an appointment or a visa guaranteed?

No. Institutions and authorities decide. Published processing estimates do not include every appointment or passport-return delay, and support cannot guarantee a travel date.

Is my profile submitted when I use the page tool?

No. The tool creates a summary in your browser only. It does not send or store your entries on our server and is not an admissions assessment. Contact us separately to discuss available support.
