Study in Finland

Compare Finnish university and university-of-applied-sciences programmes, prepare your original qualifications and plan tuition and living funds before applying. Check the programme entry method and Migri residence conditions separately. Your awarding institution grading legend remains essential; no German-style foreign-grade conversion is assumed.

Programmes and entry preparation

The official Study in Finland portal links degree programmes, universities and Studyinfo applications. Non-EU English-taught degree tuition, financial evidence and real living expenditure are separate. Programmes assess qualifications, language and selection individually, and a course grade does not itself establish admission eligibility. Doctoral or research activity needs its own host and immigration assessment.

Bachelor and first-degree study

Use Studyinfo and the institution instructions for the programme entry method, qualification evidence, tests and language. Universities and UAS programmes must be compared on their actual requirements rather than a generic national CGPA cutoff.

  • Prepare school-leaving records, subject prerequisites and any required entrance or preparatory evidence.
  • Provide the original grading legend and programme-specific language evidence.
  • Check the institution deadline, admission conditions and qualification outcome before payment.
Discuss this study level

Master and postgraduate study

Confirm the relevant first degree, subject content, language and programme-specific criteria. Different university/UAS programmes can request different evidence; no universal prior-experience or grade threshold is stated here.

  • Prepare the first degree, transcripts, relevant subject credits and any required portfolio, references or experience.
  • Provide the original grading legend and programme-specific language evidence.
  • Check the institution deadline, admission conditions and qualification outcome before payment.
Discuss this study level

Doctoral, research and preparatory options

The official portal states that doctoral programmes are tuition-free irrespective of nationality, but funding and admission are separate. Its residence guidance distinguishes scientific research from the ordinary student route. Non-degree/exchange activity must be checked on its own conditions.

Explore fields through the official programme portal

  • Engineering and technology
  • Computer science and data
  • Business and economics
  • Natural and life sciences
  • Humanities and social sciences
  • Design, education and other fields

These are search categories, not a promise that every institution offers every subject. Regulated professions and practical placements can require additional checks.

Understand your academic profile

Finnish academic records and institution assessment

A universally applicable numeric grade-conversion method was not verified in the accessible sources. UEF specifically describes widespread pass/fail assessment for exchange courses. Keep original records and request the receiving institution rules; do not apply a German formula to foreign marks.

Local grades, not a conversion of foreign marks
Grade or resultMeaning and scope
Original numeric or letter gradePreserve the awarded mark and its best/passing scale.
UEF pass/fail assessmentWidely used for its exchange courses; confirm acceptance with the home institution.
Institution grading legendConfirm the receiving programme assessment and selection requirements.
Exchange or non-degree transcriptA transcript can record study completed without awarding a Finnish degree.

There is no universal German-style calculation applied here. Do not infer admission from a passing grade or convert your percentage or CGPA without an accepted method.

Admission and language checks

  • Follow the chosen programme qualification and selection evidence requirements.
  • Check accepted English, Finnish or Swedish evidence and any entrance examination.
  • Distinguish degree admission from exchange, visiting or non-degree enrolment.

Funding opportunities

Scholarships and fee waivers

Institutions may offer tuition scholarships for fee-paying applicants. Confirm eligibility, coverage, deadlines and continuation conditions with the university. Do not assume a waiver provides living funds or covers insurance and travel.

Check official scholarship guidance

Work rights are conditional, and employment is not guaranteed funding.

During study and after graduation

Working while studying

The official study portal describes up to 30 hours of employment per week on average during the academic year. Confirm Migri rules, averaging, holidays and degree-related work exceptions for your actual permit; employment is not guaranteed initial funding.

The official residence guidance describes an eligible post-graduation permit of up to two years to seek work or start a business. Confirm Migri eligibility, financial evidence and application timing; no job or permanent residence is promised.

Questions before applying

Study in Finland: FAQs

Use current institution and authority instructions for your case, not a generic regional checklist.

Is a universal Finnish foreign-grade formula supplied?

No such method was verified from the accessible official material. Use original records and institution assessment; this does not mean every institution lacks conversion rules.

What is UAS?

University of applied sciences, a provider/programme category in the official portal; check its actual entry criteria.

Are English-taught degrees free for all applicants?

No. The official portal describes non-EU tuition and status exemptions; confirm the actual programme fee.

Official guidance

Is EUR 800 the full monthly cost of study?

It is the published maintenance minimum, not tuition or a guaranteed living budget. The portal suggests EUR 900-1,200 for living expenditure.

Do doctoral applicants use the same ordinary student process?

The official residence guidance distinguishes scientific research. Confirm the host and Migri category.

Official guidance

Can exchange study award a Finnish degree automatically?

No. UEF distinguishes degree, exchange and visiting study status; non-degree study can provide a transcript without a degree.

Official guidance

Is a grade conversion an admission decision?

No. Local grade references and official equivalence services explain academic records; the admitting institution still decides qualification recognition, subject fit, language and selection.

Should I convert my CGPA using a percentage shortcut?

Only use a conversion accepted by the receiving institution. Provide the original transcript, maximum and minimum passing marks, grading legend and any official conversion supplied by your awarding institution.

Is there a universal IELTS score or study-gap limit?

No universal score or gap cutoff is stated here. Check the actual programme requirements and explain your study history accurately; institutional selection and immigration assessment are separate.

Does an English-taught programme remove every local-language requirement?

No. Admission, daily life, placements and regulated professional practice can have different language expectations. Check the programme and any placement requirements separately.

Can part-time work pay for the initial visa application?

Do not rely on finding work. Prepare the required financial evidence before travel and a realistic budget without guaranteed earnings. Work rights do not guarantee a vacancy.

Are proof of funds and tuition the same cost?

No. Tuition is a charge; maintenance funds show resources available for living. Do not double-count the same living balance as both a fee and expenditure.

Are scholarships or fee waivers guaranteed?

No. Check nationality, programme, deadline, coverage and renewal conditions with the official provider. A tuition waiver may not cover living costs, insurance or travel.

Do all South Asian applicants use the same embassy?

No. Citizenship, passport and legal residence affect jurisdiction and documents. Confirm the current competent mission and authorized centre; some applicants may need to travel to another country.

Should I legalize every document before choosing a programme?

Check the institution and mission requirements first. Translation, apostille, consular legalization and academic verification are different procedures; apply the requirement relevant to your record and location.

Are admission, an appointment or a visa guaranteed?

No. Institutions and authorities decide. Published processing estimates do not include every appointment or passport-return delay, and support cannot guarantee a travel date.

Is my profile submitted when I use the page tool?

No. The tool creates a summary in your browser only. It does not send or store your entries on our server and is not an admissions assessment. Contact us separately to discuss available support.
