Short-term visits to Finland

A Schengen C visa is for short temporary visits, including tourism, private visits and eligible business meetings. It does not authorize ordinary employment or long-term residence.

Requirements can change and depend on your circumstances. Use the linked official guidance and your application instructions before making decisions.

Requirements and options to understand

Use these points to prepare. The Finnish authorities and institutions decide which route and documents apply to each case.

01

Stay limit and permitted purpose

A Schengen short-stay visa generally allows up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the Schengen Area.

  • Use it for tourism, private and family visits, or eligible business meetings and negotiations.
  • Business meetings do not turn a visitor visa into a work permit; ordinary employment requires the appropriate work authorization.
  • If your planned activity is seasonal employment, use the separate seasonal-work process.

02

South Asian ordinary passports

Ordinary passport holders from the following South Asian countries generally need a visa for a short Schengen visit to Finland:

  • Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan and India.
  • Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
  • Visa exemptions can differ for diplomatic or official passports; confirm the exact document on Finland’s current passport list.

03

Typical supporting documents

The mission assesses the purpose, duration, funds and intention to leave the Schengen Area after the visit.

  • A valid passport, completed application, photograph and supporting itinerary or invitation.
  • Travel medical insurance for the Schengen Area with at least EUR 30,000 coverage.
  • Proof of sufficient funds; Finland’s published minimum is EUR 50 per day.
  • The passport should be issued within the last 10 years and remain valid at least three months after planned departure.
  • Apply through the Finnish mission or its designated visa centre; normal processing can take up to 15 days and may take longer.

04

Airport transit and seasonal work are separate

A transit visa and a seasonal-work visa cover different purposes from a visitor visa.

  • Airport transit visa rules may apply to some nationalities and routes, including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
  • Seasonal employment of up to 90 days requires the applicable seasonal-work visa for visa-required nationals, not an ordinary tourist visa.
  • Check the mission’s country-specific checklist before booking travel.

Questions to consider

These answers are general orientation, not a decision on eligibility or an application.

Can a business visitor work in Finland?

No. A short-stay business visa is for permitted temporary business visits, such as meetings; it does not authorize ordinary employment.

Does an invitation guarantee a visa?

No. The applicant must still meet the visa conditions and provide sufficient evidence.

Can I stay longer than 90 days on a Schengen C visa?

No. A C visa is limited to 90 days in any 180-day period. A longer stay normally requires an appropriate residence permit.
